The Canary Islands are made up of 7 islands: Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Gomera. For many years the islands have been very popular holiday destinations, and it is no wonder why – with so many great places to visit, picturesque beaches and fantastic weather, there are many reasons to visit the Canary Islands. Still need convincing? Here are 5 reasons why you should pay the islands a visit…

Reason #1: The Beaches

Gorgeous sandy beaches surrounded by stunning scenery – could you ask for any more? Beaches are definitely one of the best reasons to visit the Canaries with each island oozing a phenomenal amount of natural beauty on their coastlines. El Golfo (Lanzarote) boasts a black sand and green sea beach – a beautiful spectacle, and Corralejo (Fuerteventura) is one of the best beaches around with 6 miles of glorious golden sand and a backdrop of dramatic sandy mountains.

Reason #2: The Weather

If you are escaping a notoriously miserable country like England and seeking the sun like many others across the globe, the fabulous weather of the Canaries is a great reason to head to the islands. Not only do July and August have average temperatures of 28 and 29 degrees Celsius, the sea temperatures stay a beautiful 23 degrees and there is an average of only 1 day a month with a little rainfall!

Reason #3: The Culture

Many cultures and traditions that surround the Canary Islands are enough of a reason to venture there. Whether you are there to experience the Gomeran whistling ‘language’, the round buildings of El Hierro, Fuerteventura’s museums, Lanzarote’s African influences, the archaeological discoveries of La Palma, Tenerife’s cuisine, Gran Canaria’s mixed cultures or the folk music from all islands, a rich culture can be found on these islands.

Reason #4: The Sports

Although well recognised for its weather and its lovely beaches, the Canary Islands are also associated with extreme sports by many adventure lovers. Ideal for runners, hikers and cyclist alike, the Canaries have many roads, paths, shorelines and mountains to explore. Whether you try your hand at kite surfing in Lanzarote or paragliding in Gran Canaria, you will love the amount of sports and adventures the Canary Islands have to offer.

Reason #5: The Events

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is reason enough to venture to the Canary Islands for your next holiday. Held in February, the carnival is one big week-long party with extravagant costumes, loud music and a buzzing atmosphere leading up to Ash Wednesday. A fancy dress handcrafted boat ride called Achipencos in Fuerteventura also is a spectacle and a joy to watch, and Lanzarote also has an abundance of fiestas throughout September to sink your teeth into.

Whether you are visiting the Canary Islands for the beaches, weather, sports, culture or events, there is bound to be something to suit everyone which is what makes this an ideal holiday destination!
