Happy Holidays: What To Do In Tenerife At Christmas

Holiday-goers can kiss their winter blues goodbye with a short flight to Tenerife for the holidays. Whilst the sunny Spanish island may not be a traditional Christmas setting, most visitors are happy to trade out winter weather for some time on the beach. Tenerife offers plenty of activities where families can spend quality time together, which is really what the holiday season is all about. If the weather alone is not convincing enough, here is a sample of some of the activities that are possible in Tenerife on Christmas.

Lounge on the Beach
Tenerife’s beaches are its biggest draw and no ‘to do’ list would be complete without them. Part of what makes the island so popular is its family-friendly beaches that are well protected and suitable for smaller children. Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are two great options for families. Not only are they calm beaches, but they are also well serviced by cafes and restaurants. In addition to relaxing and playing in the water, families can take a stroll along Tenerife’s impressive coastline during low tide to find an amazing range of shells and sea life.

Sail the Seas
Boating and sailing are popular activities in Tenerife. The blue waters of the North Atlantic are inviting year round, with boats departing from Tenerife on a regular basis. Visitors can choose from leisure sailing, fishing or even dolphin watching. Adventurers can opt for snorkeling or diving expeditions. The waters off the Canary Islands are home to countless tropical fish and sea turtles. For a truly unforgettable experience, charter a private boat or yacht for the holidays and spend Christmas on the ocean.

Play Golf
Tenerife is home to excellent golf courses, many of which boast wonderful views of the ocean. The island’s winter weather is perfect for golfing, with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees Celsius. There are several courses to choose from in Tenerife, including Golf Las Americas, Golf del Sur and Golf Costa Adeje. Golf packages can be booked ahead of time and make an excellent Christmas gift.

Try out Surfing
Surfing is possible on both the northern and southern shores of Tenerife. Whether you’re an experienced surfer or have never touched a surfboard in your life, the island’s surf shops have you covered. Visitors can rent surfboards right off the beach or partake in surfing lessons to get a good foundation in the sport. Thanks to the excellent weather, it’s possible to surf all year round in the Canary Islands. Other water sports such as windsurfing and wakeboarding are also possible.

Head to a Water Park for Family Fun
Water parks are a great way to spend time with the family and are especially fun for smaller children. There are several water parks on Tenerife, with Siam Park being by far the largest. The Thai-themed water park includes a huge range of water slides and pools suitable for all age ranges. There is also a floating restaurant and Thai market onsite. Aqualand Costa Adeje is another popular water park and is best known for its dolphin show.

Hike in Teide National Park
Teide National Park is located at the centre of the island and contains its highest peak. Guided hikes in both English and Spanish are held on a daily basis and generally last about 2 hours. On a clear day, the views from the park of the surrounding island and ocean are amazing. Experienced hikers can obtain a free permit to climb up Pico del Teide, the island’s volcano. At 3,700 metres tall, snow can be seen on its slopes, especially in winter.
