The Wonders of Venice

Italy is home to some of the most romantic cities in the world and famous for numerous things, from its delicious culinary offerings to gondolas and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If you take a med cruise you are more than likely to visit Italy. In fact, any trip based around Europe is sure to have it featured on the itinerary.

Having said that, one of the places that stands out in my mind when I think of Italy is the beautiful city of Venice; situated in north-east Italy on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. The stunning city is ever more popular with tourists, and has so many points of interest to visit that one could never be at a loss of things to do or see.

One place that is truly wonderful was the Bridge of Sighs. It is made of striking white limestone and has a lot of history behind it. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that criminals saw before their imprisonment. The bridge name suggests that prisoners would “sigh” at their final view of the stunning city of Venice through the window before being taken down to be locked up. Legend has it that couples will be granted an eternity of love and bliss if they kiss on a gondola underneath the Bridge Of Sighs at sunset (although that might just be a nice excuse!).

Another point of interest in this fascinating city is Saint Mark’s Basilica, a stunning cathedral, which is the most famous of all the city’s churches. It is a monument made unique by both its wealth of history and the magnificence of its façade and interior. It really is a gorgeous building and a symbol of everything that Venice is about.

There are so many must-see places in Venice that it really is a place you would have to visit for yourself. As well as the amazing canal structure and beautiful architecture though, something that must be done when in Venice is sample the local cuisine. The place to go would probably be Zenzero, a cute little bar with an excellent reputation. The bar staff and waiters are incredibly friendly, the atmosphere is great and the food is of an extremely high standard and of very reasonable value! Then, there is pizza. Muro Frari is well within budget, and the pizza offerings are delicious! A popular place for locals, you will feel like you are eating like a true Italian, without breaking the bank!

Of course though, a city break wouldn’t be a city break without a spot of shopping. The number one product of Venice is glass, and shopping in this incredible city you are bound to feel a little overwhelmed by the huge array of glassware on offer pretty much everywhere you turn. There are also vibrant carnival masks – which make great souvenirs – and many are hand crafted.

Obviously though, it cannot be forgotten that there are classic Italian-design clothing, shoes and accessories – enough to keep you busy for hours! Streets radiate from St Mark’s Square, so the best way to shop in the Italian city is to dive straight in! You really are sure to find what you are looking for.

So, next time Venice is a port of call on your cruise, you take a city break around Europe or you are considering just getting away for a while, your camera is a must-pack. With so much rich history, breath-taking buildings and fine examples of Italian dishes, it truly is a fantastic experience.
