Vancouver Island lies on the West Coast of Canada in the aptly named Beautiful British Columbia. Vancouver Island is home to the City of Victoria, the capital of the British Columbia province (known as BC), and is considered one of the most stunning landscapes in the world.

Things to do on Vancouver Island

·         Visit the Legislature Building for lunch or dinner – As Victoria is the capital of BC, it hosts parliament in one of the most stunning buildings in Canada. Take a tour and discover a city steeped in Canadian history then eat in the decadent dining room alongside members of parliament. Bookings will be necessary when the Legislative Assembly is sitting.

·         Whale Watching – Whale watching in the waters off Vancouver Island is a must! Expect to see all kinds of wildlife on these sea tours but most magnificent of all will be the orca sightings. The orca pods travel to the West Coast of Canada every spring to be with their families.

·         Sample The Brews – Vancouver Island is known for its incredible micro-breweries thatsupply off licences and pubs all over BC with delicious beers, ales and lagers. Take a tour and sample these organic delights. Many breweries offer events such as meat and beer sampling and art showings.

·         Hike, Bike and More – You will have a hard time finding a landscape as beautiful and variedas Vancouver Island. Multiple lakes for swimming and water sports, several mountains for hiking and mountain biking and endless views of the Olympic Mountains will keep you outside and occupied for your whole holiday.

·         Winter Sports – If you are heading to Vancouver Island in the late autumn and winter, make the most of the ski weather and head up the slopes.

·         More Food and Drink – Vancouver Island is committed to a sustainable lifestyle and you will see this evident in its many farmers and craft markets and food based events. There are several local vineyards just outside of Victoria and all are worth a visit or two!

·         Arts, Culture and History – Victoria is steeped in First Nations history. The Royal BC Museum has incredible exhibits that highlight the extraordinary history of these native people. Other museums include the Quw’ustun’ Cultural Centre in Duncan, the U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay and Museum at Campbell River.

·         Surf’s Up – Head up to the very northern tip of the island to experience some of the best surf in the world. Tofino is an experience in itself. Expect an extremely laid back vibe, stunning stretches of beach, great food and great relaxation.

The list of things to do on Vancouver Island is endless and that’s before you visit the other West Coast Gulf Island such as Pender, Salt Spring and Galliano. Two weeks on the island is a great amount of time to sample the local delights in Victoria and to take shorter trips to other parts of the island.
