Why to visit Paris for Romance

It may now have become somewhat of a cliché to say so, but Paris is undoubtedly one of the most romantic cities in the world. Almost everything about the city seems to speak in the dulcet tones of love: the gorgeous, sensual architecture; the flirtatious accents emanating from candlelit restaurants; the startlingly un-British displays of public attention exhibited by fresh-faced couples smooching on the city’s broad and leafy central avenues. It’s no wonder, then, that Paris remains one of the top honeymoon or romantic break destinations for tourists from across the globe. Indeed, there is plenty for a couple in the lusty throes of romance to do to celebrate their ardour in ‘the city of love’. What follows are some of the highlights that you can experience when visiting Paris on a day trip or longer.

French Kissing

Make that movie-screen-moment come true by sharing a kiss with your beloved on the Eifel Tower. With a sublime 360 degree panorama of the Paris skyline as your backdrop, you’re sure to feel romantically inspired, making it an excellent place for proposals. Be warned, however, the queues in summer can reach shocking lengths and may dampen your experience. Go off-season to avoid this.

Romantic Dining

As the day wanes and the city’s neon lights begin to take effect, be sure to grab a table for two at one of the Paris’s numerous romantic restaurants. After all, there’s nothing that says romance more than fine wine, fine food, and a bit of footsie under the table. Top spots include Le Jules Verne – located on the Eifel Tower, which offers a stunning dining experience with spectacular views, and Georges restaurant at the Pompidou Centre, set on the building’s rooftop and thus also offering great views and a unique experience (as well as good food!). Another glamorous (but expensive) Le Grand Vefour at the Palais Royal, a venue with a long-established reputation for good food and top clientele – it was favoured by Napoleon and Jean Cocteau among others! More obscure bohemian eateries suited to a good romantic meal include the Place Dauphine (Ile de la cite), and Dans le noir (51 Rue Quincampoix), which offers a unique ‘dining in darkness’ experience (that’s right, the lights go off completely!).

Soak up the Atmosphere

Have a great day and create some marvelous memories by touring the cultural hotspots of the city with your partner. Why not try some night-time culture -Paris art galleries often stay open late, by which time they become very quiet, and are as such an excellent place to enjoy a quiet romantic evening. Taking a boat-trip down the Seine or visiting the popular ‘Wall of Love’ (Rue André Barsacq), where couples can inscribe their love for one another into the stone, are other romantic highlights.

Paris is a city of love and adventure, so simply going out for an impromptu wander through the streets with your partner can lead to a romantic experience you’ll never forget. But be aware that top destinations and restaurants can be overcrowded at peak times, so be sure to plan your romantic trip in a way that accommodates for this.
